Marchas Populares de Lisboa 2026 — “Somos Lisboa, Somos Europa”

The Marchas Populares de Lisboa have existed since 1932 and are, without question, the most beautiful and most extraordinary spectacle the city produces entirely on its own. Each neighbourhood spends months rehearsing, sewing costumes, and composing the music it will perform as it descends Avenida da Liberdade. There is serious rivalry. There are tears. There are years when Alfama wins and Mouraria is not happy about it — and vice versa.

In 2026, the theme is 'Somos Lisboa, Somos Europa' — a tribute to the Treaty of Lisbon and to the 40th anniversary of Portugal's accession to what was then the EEC (European Economic Community). Twenty competing marchas descend the Avenida on the night of 12 June from 21:00 (9:00 PM). Three non-competing marchas also perform: Santa Casa da Misericórdia, Voz do Operário, and Mercados de Lisboa. The parade is free — but if you want a good spot, arrive before 20:00 (8:00 PM).

Those who prefer to watch seated with better visibility can attend the preview performances at Altice Arena on 29, 30 and 31 May, where the marchas present themselves to the jury before the main parade. Arraial da Vila Berta — The Most Photogenic Neighbourhood Festival of the Santos Populares

Vila Berta is a private street in the heart of Graça — built in the early 20th century as a working-class housing development — and it is among the most beautiful streets in Lisbon, full stop. In June, it transforms into an arraial that is simultaneously a century-old neighbourhood tradition and one of the most widely shared events on the city's social media.

The Vila Berta arraial has live popular music almost every day from the start of June through to the night of the 12th. On Santo António's night, the party runs until 4:00 AM. Entry is free. The Renovar a Mouraria arraial at Largo da Rosa is, every year, the hardest one to explain to someone who hasn't been. It's not pimba (traditional upbeat Portuguese pop music). It's not just sardines. It's a multicultural programme with musicians from Angola, Cape Verde, Brazil, Portugal and beyond — all happening in a Moorish square 10 minutes from Rossio.

The association Renovar a Mouraria has 18 years of arraial tradition and the ethos is clear: free entry, inclusive atmosphere, varied food with vegetarian options. From 1 to 17 June, Largo da Rosa is another world. If you've had enough of pimba and want the festival with a different texture, this is your arraial.

Casamentos de Santo António — The Most Moving Tradition of the Santos Populares

Santo António is Lisbon's patron saint and, according to tradition, the saint who helps people find love and a partner. From 1958 onwards, Lisbon City Council took this seriously and began organising collective wedding ceremonies on the night of 12 June. Today, dozens of couples marry for free — dress, bouquet, and the entire ceremony sponsored by the council.

You don't need to be getting married to watch — and it is genuinely worth seeing. The procession and ceremony take place around the Igreja de Santo António (Church of Saint Anthony) and the Sé de Lisboa (Lisbon Cathedral), with the city itself as the backdrop. • Sardinha assada — 1,50€ a 2€/unidade nos arraiais de bairro; até 4€ em zonas mais turísticas. Pede sempre com pão e pimento assado.
• Bifana — lombinho de porco em pão, mostarda opcional. Entre 2,50€ e 4€. A bifana da Mouraria costuma ser melhor do que a de Alfama.

How to Experience the Santos Populares Without Regrets

🕘 The Night of 12 June Has Three Phases — Plan Them

21:00–23:00 (9:00–11:00 PM): You're on Avenida da Liberdade watching the Marchas. Arrive at 20:00 (8:00 PM) to guarantee a spot with visibility. Bring water and patience — it's two hours on your feet. 23:00–01:00 (11:00 PM–1:00 AM): Head down to Alfama or Mouraria while the city is still breathing. From 01:00 AM onwards: it's a jungle. Either you love it, or you head home with exactly the right memories.

🌿 The Manjerico Is Not Decoration — It's Protocol

The manjerico (basil plant in a traditional clay pot) is the symbol of June in Lisbon. Buy one before you go to the arraial — they're sold at street stalls throughout the month of June, from around €3–5. The pot with a small flag and a handwritten popular verse is the most authentically Lisbon souvenir you can take home. And it smells better than anything you'll find in the tourist shops on Rua Augusta.

A Sardinha Melhor Não É Sempre a Mais Cara

Uma sardinha nos arraiais custa entre 1,50€ e 4€, dependendo do bairro e do arranjismo de cada tasquinha. A sardinha mais cara não é obrigatoriamente a melhor.
